    Alii fellow citizens,

I read in Island Times issue dated on June 1, 2012 that Sen. Paul Ueki has decided to run for a Senate seat this upcoming election. I believe Sen. Ueki is a wonderful person. However, I do not believe in his political agenda. For instance, this guy authored a bill to commercialize shark fishing in Palau’s EEZ in March of 2009. And now his latest bill, which seeks to amend Palau’s radio communication will shut down Palau’s only regional television station that also employs a number of Palauans if it passes. This is a person who said on an interview with Island Times reporter that if he is re-elected he plans to enact laws that will open up job opportunities in Palau. Really? Your latest bill jeopardizes a number of people’s job. Palauan people. Sen. Ueki for the last four years has been under the radar to me. I do not recall him introducing any legislation that may bring in job opportunities, improve health, education and all other issues he says he plans to do if re-elected. What did he do in the last four years? Nothing. Why couldn’t he accomplish those plans in the last four years? I want to know the exact reason as to why he is running again? Is it the 50k salary? Come on people! We need professional, determined, and hardworking leaders who understand the issues that Palauans face everyday. We need a leader (Senator, Delegate, Pres or VP) who takes matters into action. A leader who actively seeks ways. A leader who works for the people first then himself last. A leader who hears the people and find ways to solve the matters at hand. A leader who understands the need for a higher minimum wage. A leader who understands that Palauans are suffering and desperate for opportunities. A leader who will open up those opportunities. A leader who understands that our safety needs to be improved. A leader who understands that police officers, nurses and teachers need a higher pay now. A leader who understands that right now the crisis in in our youth. Everyday a youth commits a crime whether it be drinking alcohol, fighting, or killer another. Youth is our future yet I do not hear anyone who has plans to help these kids. The kids who have lost their ways are still OUR children to take care of. Each and everyone of them deserve attention and help. We need a leader who will help them. We deserve and need a leader who will take all of these matters into action and not just talk about on their campaign speech.

Can we find a leader who possesses these traits? I’m optimistic, but it takes the entire community to vote them in. So please do not vote those who have brought corruption into our community back in. Do not vote those who have broken their promises and have done nothing for Palauans.

We need an active youth counseling program, we need a mental health prison, we need a more active mental health program, we higher minimum wage, we need a better jail system, hospital needs to be relocated for safety purposes, we need improved health equipment and services, we need to improve education, we need to reduce the amount cars running around. There are so many important issues that we need to deal with, but they never make it to table.

I beg you to take a moment and really think about that your children’s future because if we don’t make the necessary improvements and changes now, our children will not see a bright future. They will keep leaving this beautiful country of ours and soon we will not have any traditions and customs to pass along.

Really think about who is the right person to represent us?

    Sulang,

Young Palauan who hopes for a big change and a bright future.

You are right that we need all those things you mentioned, but let’s get real, we need more resources and by resources I mean MONEY… You can say we can raise the minimum wage but to do that the govt would need to find the resources to do so. Palauan government spends more than it makes meaning we have a deficit. It’s such a same that we depend so much on Japanese and Taiwanese tourists when we have natural resources like oil and fishing and who knows what lies beneath our feet. If our leaders and citizens refuse to explore other means of supplementing our economy, I do not see our island being competitive in the global economy let alone the Pacific. We need leaders who are proactive and think outside of the box, and as long as we lag behind the rest of the pacific and “TMUT” from the nipples of The United States of America, young palauans like myself will leave our island in search of better opportunities!!!

Hello Young Belauan.. I applaud your recommendations in regards to all the candidates. Yep!! We need changes. I’m very saddened that my candidate for President, Ms. Sandra Sumang Pierrantozzi didn’t make it during the primary election. Chelik, ke de meskelang a rechad er a Belau. Ke de kmal blind? We need a trustworthy leader who had a record of accomplishments while she was a first woman to become a Minister of Finance during Etpison’s administration, and as a senator, and vice president
